It’s all go in the Australian land based industry, with numerous states vying to be number one among both local players and international visitors when it comes to gaming. As far as many players are concerned, Sydney is currently the place to be and the main destination overall for tourists. However, great casinos attract a certain type of international visitor and Brisbane wants to position itself as the place to be for high rollers and casual players alike.

Part of the plans for putting Brisbane on the map among casino players involved opening a second facility alongside the existing Treasury Casino and Hotel, operated by Echo. That company is now in with a shot at a Brisbane monopoly as it was announced this week that both Echo and James Packer’s Crown Group are on the shortlist to develop the second casino.

Echo have a particular stake in the new development as it is expected to be far larger and more profitable than the Treasury and given that the new casino will be at Queen’s Wharf, just a short walk from the existing casino, it is likely that the two venues will be in direct competition with each other. Indeed, the company has already mentioned that they are willing to go all in on the new development where if they are approved for the new casino they will turn the Treasury into boutique hotels and restaurants, marking the end of its 123 year tenure as Brisbane’s go to gambling destination.

The creation of the casino is pretty much a certainty now and will undoubtedly enhance the gaming rivalry between Sydney and Brisbane. Sydney is guaranteed to become the first Australian city with two major casinos with plans already well underway for the new facility to open in 2019. Brisbane’s new casino will not be ready until several years later although the area certainly has gaming pedigree given that Queensland is currently home to almost a third of all major Aussie casinos.
